We are staying at Bonuka Adventure Camp which is in a private game reserve. This one hundred and eighty thousand hectare area is owned by the local tribe. They allow the safari company to run tourists through here as a means of income. To ensure the safari company follows the rules, there is one tribal observer in each Land Rover.
This sort of eco-tourism is good for everyone involved. The tribe and the safari company make money and provide employment, the tourists get to see the animals in unspoiled habitats, and the animals don't need to worry a out being hunted by humans.
Yesterday, we saw simba twice. Today, we found a pride of five. Two female adults, and three large cubs. The cubs were playing, which I hope will mean good pictures. Their game uses the same movements they will later use when hunting.
We have finally seen zebra. Unlike those we saw in Serengeti, these do not migrate.
All travel comes with minor discomforts. whether it be airport security, and small seats on airplanes, or insect bites. We were in the back row of the Land Rover, which quickly turned into Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Between the Land Rover and my continuous looking around for animals, my vertigo has been acting up.
I've also been experiencing the side-effects of the anti-malaria medicine. When it was prescribed, I was warned of vivid dreams. I've never had them before, but they have started on this trip, and are unpleasant. I do not look forward to going to bed. But then I wake up, and it's another game drive. On the whole, I still think it's worth it.
Our afternoon adventure was a speed boat which took us out to a large group of hippo. Hippo kill more people than lions. We kept a respectful distance. There was a bonus on the boat ride. We found some small frogs which had a chameleon behavior. At night, they take on a dark color. In the heat of the day, they turn white to reflect sunlight away. One jumped onto My Lovely Wife's pant leg, and slowly began to match the clothing's color.
