The Golden Buddha

May 26, 2008

Bangkok, Thailand

It's our last full day in Thailand. Just a few items to cram in before we leave. We started with the Vimanmek mansion which was a royal residence for six years, a hundred years ago. Not bad for temporary housing! Like the Maharajah Palace I visited in Mysore, Vimanmek does not allow pictures. Damned shame because it really is a grand building.

It's Monday and traffic was thick. We had to fight our way across town to see the Golden Buddha. If you think Jesus is big in Rome, Buddha is just as big in Thailand. There are temples everywhere. But the Buddha in this temple was made with 24 tonnes of gold. I'm told they built the statue and then built the temple around it.

More fighting our way through traffic to the Bangkok aquarium. I'm a little spoiled on aquariums. I've been to so many, and I scuba. It was a good aquarium, but I'm just not as excited as I have been about other sights in Thailand.

Our final stop was a dinner cruise on the river. It was golden hour and the light on many of the temples was perfect!

This closes out Thailand for us. Tomorrow, we will travel to Vietnam. Thailand has been a very busy week, and we plan to take it much slower in Saigon.
