The Rain

June 13, 2008

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

It's the beginning of the raining season. The weather is on the same schedule everyday. The morning is overcast until about 11. Then the rain starts, and goes on and off. The best thing we've found to do when it rains is to go swimming. If you're going to get wet, why not get really wet?

The resort's pool is much cleaner than the pool in Phnom Penh, and the water is slightly warmer than the rain. One tends to face towards the direction the rain is falling to keep it out of the eyes. There's a quiet drumming on your head.

In the afternoon, the rain starts and stops. You keep a hotel umbrella with you at all times. But the real show happens when the sun goes down. The rain gets very intense, and brings lightning with it. I've seen this before on an island off of Nha Trang. We would watch the storm head to the mainland and start a light show every evening as the weather hit the mountains of the central highlands. When the lightning starts, swimming is a bad idea.

The rains become more intense as the night continues; sometimes so loud that it will wake you up in the middle of the night. And then the morning is just like yesterday, overcast until about 11.
